These graphite drawings on paper from 2008 are calligraphic exercises - letter-forms constructed from waves and clusters of marks. I imagined a field of wheat attempting to form itself into words, a mute landscape swelling in the wind, blades of grass arranging and aligning themselves. The drawings were a pleasurable labor of repetition, feeling the softness and hardness of individual lines, layered in rhythm, feeling impressions on a surface while leaving residue, the forms bending under the pencil. Quiet drawings, these are landscapes gathered into bundles.

BUST: a sensual display of female form

…Becker-Black captures the figure at its most human--the way a single muscle, movement or stretch reveals that which we are most hopeful for, dream of, or find passion in. By combining the freshness of a gestural sketch with deftness of volume, Becker-Black builds a type of poetry from the visual. Becker-Black's work takes her viewer to these places of vulnerability--of danger--then safely escorts them through, meanwhile revealing a connection to faith, a restoration of humanness, and a fascination with the elemental functions of the human body.

Klein and Woolley:North

A musical/visual duo

Originally based in L.A., the duo recently relocated to Portland, Oregon to continue their work in animation and fine art. Current visual aesthetics turn a macro view on the natural world, lending an intimate look at elements like butterfly wings, fish scales, and bird feathers. Their paintings are complimented with ornately carved wood silhouettes and hand-hewed frames, melding organic and earthy design elements with clean, chic presentation. Staying true to their firmly rooted natural feel, the pieces are designed and crafted using recycled materials and wood harvested from sustainable resources.

Klein and Woolley initially formed as the musical/visual duo of Billygoat, producing animated art films and performing their live, original scores. The films have been described as "stop-motion shorts of staggering complexity," created one tiny movement at a time via tens of thousands of individual photographs of an ever-morphing art piece. These photos are then stitched together to become an elaborately detailed and captivating art film, bringing their other-worldly aesthetic to life

Oriana Lewton-Leopold was born in Portland, Oregon. She received her BA in Mixed Media art from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA and has studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, the Chautauqua Institute, and the Universitat Der Kunste in Berlin, Germany. Her work has been exhibited in New York and Maine. Oriana currently lives and works in Portland.

Vacillations

paintings by Ruth Lantz

Ruth Lantz approaches painting with the knowledge of unknowing. She creates images without an immediately identifiable context, but an ambiguous and shifting understanding. Through the combination of space photography, slide cultures, and x-ray imagery Lantz enables the viewers to re-discover unknown realities. She applies multiple thing layers of acrylic paint to build up luminosity, creating both pictorial depth and a distant surface. Through this process Lantz creates an image in constant flux, searching for both its beginning and its end.
