I imagined a field of wheat attempting to form itself into words, a mute landscape swelling in the wind, blades of grass arranging and aligning themselves. The drawings were a pleasurable labor of repetition, feeling the softness and hardness of individual lines, layered in rhythm, feeling impressions on a surface while leaving residue, the forms bending under the pencil. By combining the freshness of a gestural sketch with deftness of volume, Becker-Black builds a type of poetry from the visual. Becker-Black's work takes her viewer to these places of vulnerability--of danger--then safely escorts them through, meanwhile revealing a connection to faith, a restoration of humanness, and a fascination with the elemental functions of the human body.

-A.
